No Child Left Behind

School District and State Public Accountability Report

What is No Child Left Behind?

The No Child Left Behind Act authorizes several federal education programs that are administered by the states. Since the law passed in 2002, states are required to evaluate students in reading and math in grades 3 through 8 and once in high school.

No Child Left Behind operates on four basic principles:

Accountability: Hold schools accountable for results and ensure that those students who are disadvantaged are able to achieve academic competence.

Flexibility: Allows school districts flexibility in the application of federal education funds to improve student achievement.

Research-based education: Emphasizes educational programs and practices that have been proven effective through scientific research.

Parent options: Increases the choices available to the parents of students by providing information about their children's education.
